Our Social Machines™ work focuses on bridging the online and off by enabling real-time social data to affect things in the real world.

What started with a Foursquare Lockbox soon morphed into a GE Social Fridge and a Thought for Food Social Vending Machine.

Today we’re proud to show the early prototype of our most diabolical Social Machine to date.

Meet Paintbot: an Arduino powered paintball gun that can be fired using Tweets.

Big props to Zach, Taylor, Nathan and Mike for creating this in less 12 hours.

The video speaks for itself. Note: The Paintbot is offline at the moment for cleaning :)

It would be cool if you guys had a lifestream, so users could see their shots as they Tweet.

    • Tony Rayo says:

I think the real goal for a livestream (that could possible turn it into a “lifestream” =p) would be to punish anyone foolish enough to walk in it’s path!

  3. bigolpoofter says:

I hope that I can derive the same pleasure as from making other people shoot!

  4. KevanKevan says:

YouTube Live it! Or… uStream it! Or…. LiveStream it! Or…. Vine App it! Or….

  5. Steve O' Malley says:

When will the machine be back online. And a live feed of the machine would be great! It would be even better if when the machine is about to shoot, you have a tv on the side that displays which tweet is shooting. Great Job guys!

  6. smellvin says:

v2.o –> Tweet an 8-bit image of Super Mario and have the gun shoot that graphic into existence.
v2.5 –> Add second and third guns for multicolor. I’m thinking flower power.

  7. Cherri says:

If a paintgun fires in an office and no one is online to see it, does it leave a spot?

  8. PeterQ says:

Sell it to the DOD. Paradrop sniper rifles into battle zone, and snipers can telecommute over their iPhones

  9. Krysten says:

How cool! Hurry and get it back online.

Using different hash tags, users would be able to control where they’re tweet-shooting.

    Why not a flamethrower :).

We need one of these for our paintball team. Love the idea!

  21. [...] The Paintbot is their latest creation. Just tweet using the hashtag #ISLPAINT and the paintbot will shoot a paintball at a whiteboard. As many commenters on the iStrategyLabs have suggested, it would be particularly awesome if the paintbot were equipped with a camera and a live feed so that people could watch their tweets get turned into paintballs in real time, but it’s still awesome just to know that such a cool machine exists. attach to a drone. Plug-in GPS coordinates to Ex’s house…try to remain calm while tweeting.

When is this going to be back online?

    • corbett3000 says:

That is a great question. We don’t know yet — there are a lot of enhancements we want to make…..and perhaps we’ll bring it back live in the Spring/Early Summer. Stay tuned :)
