At iStrategyLabs we’re fascinated with hyper-targeting marketing campaigns using social advertising. These client campaigns have been some of our most successful to date. Our “Facebook Demographics and Statistics Reports” has been written about in articles and covered on the radio/tv hundreds of times around the world. So, in our relentless pursuit for granular information regarding people on the web, and spurred by a conversation with some folks at the Human Rights Campaign we thought it might be interesting to analyze the gay and lesbian population counts on Facebook globally.

  1. What is that comment regarding the number of lesbians in DC being questionable based on? I’m not out on my Facebook profile but I will be now. So make that a plus one. It’s entirely frustrating when people assume lesbians don’t exisit. Too bad the census doesn’t cover that. Best, Erica

  2. @erica the reason is primary driven by the fact that the DC population on Facebook is 833k and if there are actually 128k DC lesbians….that represents 15% of the entire city population that’s registered for facebook. If you look at New York…there’s basically no way DC has 2.5x the number of lesbians. Theres an error in that data point.

Pete, is the joke status of “Married” to a friend of yours taken into account? Lots of girls as a joke say married to their bff Christy or whoever. interesting article.

  4. Nick O'Neill says:

    Hey Peter,

The reason the # is so high is that people often say that they live in DC if they live in the metro area. It’s also possibly a sign that lesbians are more willing to share their preference in this geographic area for one reason or another. It’s definitely interesting that the number is so high comparatively, but most people estimate the # of gays at 10 percent of the population which would mean 5 percent is what it should be.

Rather than suggesting that this number is accurate, I would suggest that the # skews further toward an accurate depiction in D.C. versus other cities.

    Best,
    Nick

errrrr? seriously, this isnt even based on true facts!

  6. fuzzy says:

this article is shit. i agree with SAUCEMAN. people randomly pin up their friends name just for the hell of it. plus u cannot judge a persons sexuality based upon whatever he/she has referred to in the Relationship tab.

  7. @sauceman yes it would be. @fuzzy “shit” is perhaps a strong way to put it. The data is merely what can be gleaned from Facebook. Is it representative of the actual % composition of Gays and Lesbians in this places? I’m not sure…people set their preferences in funny ways. Is it interesting to see difference across age and geography? For sure.

  8. Sauceman says:

Interesting! @fuzzy, great minds think alike.

‘twould be difficult to track, but I wonder how many of the “joke relationship / orientation statuses” change once the user(s) do things like:
    - get their first “real” job
    - get into grad school
    - other life events, to use the Human Resources vernacular, such as post a real relationship (gay, straight, otherwise)

I know when I was dating, I didn’t put “in a relationship” on FB until I found the real deal. Lo and behold, we’re getting married this august, a little less than 2 years later. Lots of preferences come into play, and thus lots of permutations for different outcomes. Or something like that!

good stuff, Pete, and thanks for the follow-up post

Not too surprising since DC has the 2nd largest gay population by numbers alone and the highest gay population per capita of any U.S. city. I would have though the gay male count would be higher only because gay men are pretty much everywhere in DC. Maybe lesbians aren’t as visible or open in the city. It’s legal to marry there and the cities marriage statistics are also showing that gay men are leading lesbians to the wedding chapel.

Two comments about this in relation to Pakistan:

    1) For the first part it is about the subtlety of the question where sites like facebook, myspace (and even yahoo personals and others); they don’t bluntly ask the peoples about their sexual preferences, instead the questions are subtle. i.e, in a facebook profile, and also in the survey they mentioned in the stats report, the questions posed is a multiple choice; “I’m interested in:” with several check boxes: i.e men, women, friendship, networking, etc.

    2) Now for the second part its about the cultural mismatch. Here in the west, everyone quickly knows that in the case of the first two possible answers in the facebook questions it is about a relationship-type preference . In the East, specially in Pakistan, because of the relative disconnect with the west, until the internet became popular, this is not understood with sexual preference connection. Rather. it is all about friendship, very intimate friendship, yet without any insinuation of sexuality.

So that is where the problem is – people are answering such questions without references to sexuality or sexual preference.

As it is seen in many eastern movies, the friendships are very touchy / feely type with a lot of physical touch among the same gender, while here in the west two men holding hands is frowned upon except when they are on a football field or a basketball court. Pakistani’s, on the other hand just don’t understand how west could be all hangup on this.

If we look up on facebook any profile of a (male or female) living in Pakistan, under their ‘I’m interested in” answer many times you will see the both genders listed, men and women. A facebook statistician will likely count such persons as gays and confused.
